The Standing Bear recreation area is a 685-acre multi-use park, lake, and wildlife sanctuary located between 132^nd and 144^th Streets, Fort Street and Military Road in Northwest Omaha. Opened in 1977 as a dam for flood control on the Papio Creek system, it quickly became a popular site for fishing, boating, walking, biking, ice skating, and enjoying outdoor activities all year round. Today, it is also a popular spot for picnicking and birdwatching and is home to a remote-control airplane flying field.

With Omaha’s population moving northwest during the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, developers saw the need for affordable homes which would attract first time home buyers.
